Job Description
Position:                               Assistant Professor of Exercise Science – Tenure Track
Salary and Terms:             Nine-month appointment.  Salary placement is commensurate with education and experience.

Position Description:  This position will be responsible for a 100% teaching assignment (24 credits per academic year) in the Exercise Science Program with primary teaching responsibilities in Biomechanics and Anatomical Kinesiology. The Exercise Science program at SMSU has approximately 160 undergraduate majors and offers degrees at the SMSU residential campus in Marshall, MN as well as in the Twin Cities in collaboration with partnering two-year schools. Additional responsibilities include active participation in activities that support the Exercise Science Program and its majors and minors including academic advising and service on campus committees. Faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly and creative activity, continuing preparation and study, contributing to student growth and development, and service to the University community. SMSU, in its commitment to meeting the service needs of the region, also expects faculty to engage in regional service, education or study as part of their community service responsibility.

  • Ph.D. in Exercise Science or related field is required; ABD will be considered.
  • Preference will be given to graduate level preparation in Biomechanics but other related disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to effectively teach undergraduate Biomechanics and Anatomical Kinesiology. Other courses will be assigned based upon experience and programmatic need.
  • Must have the ability to oversee and willingness to engage in undergraduate research.
  • A successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with a small number of exercise science faculty as well as recruit and retain students.
  • Demonstrated abilities/competence in instructional technology, including online instruction and commitment to interdisciplinary education is preferred.
  • Student-centered approach to education and a commitment to helping grow the exercise science program.

*Nine Month Appointments- Along with all other Universities that are part of the Minnesota State system, standard faculty appointments are for 168 duty days distributed over any nine consecutive months.  The nine months need not align with the traditional academic year and may be changed every two years.  Initial faculty appointments at SMSU are expected to be similar to or the same as the academic year unless otherwise indicated on the vacancy notice.
